About A Deeper Understanding
STUDIO
Founded by Vadim A.F. Popowsky in 2022, A.D.U. (A Deeper Understanding) is a design studio based between Antwerp and Lisbon. Portugal & Covid played a pivotal role in shaping the studio’s beginnings, providing the necessary time and space to explore a lifelong passion for interiors.
It was through this journey—and by teaming up with technically skilled partners—that Vadim finally managed to combine his seemingly contradictory passions for interior design and technology into a singular vision. Working alongside specialized designers, technicians, and skilled artisans, A.D.U. creates elevated objects that invite awe and contemplation.
PHILOSOPHY
At A.D.U., we believe life becomes richer through meaningful beliefs and practices. Contemplation, for us, is about pausing and experiencing awe toward the greater forces that make life possible—like those moments spent looking at the stars, feeling very small yet deeply connected. We aim to recreate these moments through our design objects, encouraging daily opportunities for quiet reflection. Contemplation cultivates patience, empathy, and grace, enhancing our capacity to face life with kindness and hope.
MATERIALS + TECHNOLOGY
Natural materials are essential to our practice. Stones like alabaster and Estremoz marble—shaped over thousands of years by natural forces—form the elegant heart of our designs, each carrying its unique texture and history. Alongside these, we also explore other pure materials such as glass, expanding our palette while maintaining a focus on purity and craftsmanship.
These materials are fused with custom-designed electronics and meticulously crafted algorithms, transforming timeless beauty into modern, responsive objects. Our designs bridge the ancient and the contemporary, honoring the past while embracing the future.
WHAT'S COMING NEXT
Our first collection, MOON, embodies our philosophy in its purest form. More than an object, it creates the necessary space for contemplation—and connection.
Looking ahead, A.D.U. will expand this vision through both limited-edition collectible pieces and more accessible open editions. The MOON series will evolve with new materials to create wall-mounted and outdoor editions, as well as more accessible open editions. Beyond MOON, the WORLDS and CLOUDS series will emerge—design pieces that merge technology and materiality to evoke awe and contemplation. A.D.U. Studios is actively exploring collaborations and immersive installations.
